I get more excited about predicting the US Open Men's Singles (USO MS) draw than I do for the NCAA College Basketball "March Madness" draw. I haven't been following tennis closely since Wimbledon, but that never stops me from making predictions. Registration is open for the cRap Music Fantasy League, for Q3 2007.

To enter, hit up the DP. com link & enter your team of 8 cRappers in that page's comments. Participation is free, & the winner gets a free pair of sneakers. Apparently, the deadline is Jun-30, since Q3 starts on Jul-1.

I'm a big supporter of this league. In a way, I am the R&D or IT Consultant of the operation, making the cRap spreadsheet for Dallas to track cRap events & the league standings.

Since I don't listen to commercial cRap radio, I need to do some research for my own squad, to see who stands to score massive pointage in the Q3.

Roland Garros, Women's De Facto Final: Henin v Serena

All 4 Women Singles Quarterfinals are on the Tue schedule at RG. But one of these matches is de facto final. The other women can't eff with either of these girls on red clay: Serena Williams v #1 seed Justine "horrible sportswoman" Henin.

Go Serena & go USA. I'd love for Serena to get the calendar slam this year. When she's play to her A-game level & is not injured, these other women can't touch her. She has more power then all of them, & more speed than most. Often in tennis, the power hitters are slow movers, & the speed demons can't hit the ball that hard. Serena does both. Your girl Serena is hardbody, (c) Dallas Penn, figuratively & literally.

Don't get fooled by unseeded Andreev, son is coming back from injury. He's been ranked #24 before, & was the last dude to beat Rafa back in 2005 before Rafa went on his sick 81-match clay win streak, which was ended in Rome by Fed.

I'm rooting for my fellow old heads (in tennis the 70s YOBs are already old) Canas & Moya. But realistically, Fed v Rafa Vol 12 is gonna happen, the rest is a sideshow. Hopefully Canas will be able to make the semis though by beating Nikolay "Phil Collins" Davydenko.

The most interesting match is Moya - Rafa (pictured). Both dudes are from the island of Mallorca in Spain, & are Roland Garros winners. Moya (30 yo) is Rafa's (20) mentor coming up.

Can Obi Wan Moya beat his pupil Luke Sky-Rafa? Doubt it (c) Bill O Reilly, but it should be a good match.

UPDATE Thankfully my prediction was wrong on the winner, although I was correct that it went 3 sets. Fed won his 1st match against Nadal on clay in 6 times, 26 62 60. By losing today, Nadal ends his record clay court streak at a ridic 81 wins. That record might stand for decades.

Fed's win sets up a fascinating Roland Garros, as now Fed v Nad Vol 12 seems inevitable as the RG Final, with either player capable of winning. Fed's win helps him justify his decision last week to fire his Coach Roche, as he got his first Clay Masters title since 2005 without any coach.

The RG Final will have historical importance:

For Federer
1 winning will probably enable Fed to achieve GOAT status, as it will be GS#11, only 3 behind Sampras' 14 GS, which is "tainted" due to Sampras never winning RG. It is assumed that Fed will easily win 4 more non-RG GS to pass Sampras.

2 winning will give Fed an non-calendar year Grand Slam (06-Wimbledon, 06-US, 07-AusO, 07-RG). No player has won a Grand Slam, calendar or non-calendar, since Rod Laver in 1969!

3 winning will give Fed an excellent shot at a 07 calendar year Grand Slam, as he would've have won on his 2 worst surfaces, with his 2 best surface (Wimby & US) remaining.

For Nadal
4 winning will give Nadal a 3rd consecutive RG at age 21, and put him in a great position to challenge Borg's open era record of 4 consecutive RGs & 6 total RGs. Note - the Fed implications have been covered well by the media, but apparently I am "breaking this story", ala Cenk from The Young Turks, about Nadal.

Another great thing is that TC is teaming up with DESPOT (aka ESPN) to cover RG, so there will be massive coverage available.

Federer & Nadal will play for the 11th time, this Sun morning at 8a ET (5a PT/WestSide time) on Tennis Channel (Dish channel #400), in the Masters Hamburg, GER final.

I saw the semifinal match where Fed beat Carlos Moya in 3 sets. Fed was struggling, hitting too many errors, especially on the backhand side. The South African commentator Robbie Koenig made the great observation that Fed was making too many approach shots to Moya's forehand side. Well I guess if Fed just keeps hitting approach shots to the left side of the court today, that will be fine, since Rafa is a lefty.

I feel that for Fed to have a good chance at winning Roland Garros, he needs to beat Rafa here at Hamburg. Fed will have the crowd behind him, with many Swiss fans in Hamburg in the stands. Of course, Rafa has a historical & ridic 81-match win streak on clay, going back to 2005. Peter Bodo basically says the same thing here.

I'm rooting for Fed, but I predict Rafa will win in 3 sets. Rafa might be playing the GOATest anyone has ever played on a clay court, & Fed is struggling. Having said that, Go Fed!

MV Game, Wk 2007-Apr-29

The MV Game is a fun free fantasy tennis, created & run by the Dutch dude Elikian. The goal is to pick a "team" of players from the ATP Top100 that are playing in the given tournament week. I don't play every week, but I played this wk of 2007-Apr-29, after skipping it for a while

I would advise to NEVER bet on pro tennis for money. I only have done so without money, in this MV Game. The depth is so huge such that even 200th ranked guys can beat Top10ers, so predicting any given match is tough. Pro tennis is single elimination, think of March Madness every tournament week. Now given that each match is tough, try to predict who will win several matches and reach the Semifinal round or better, where the big ranking (& MV Game) points are.

I did HORRIBLE this week, coming in LAST PLACE 49th out of 49, LOL! I tried to go with an army of lower-ranked clay court specialist players, and it didn't work.

Federer v Nadal, Vol 10 & Fed Cup BEL@USA

This is a great wkd for pro tennis, if you have the Tennis Channel.

The Greatest Sportsman of The Decade (Federer) is playing his nemesis Rafael Nadal in the Monte Carlo Final on clay. This is Volume 10 of their rivalry. Rafa is actually sonning Fed, 6-3 overall & 4-0 on clay. Rafa actually has a ridic 60-something match-win streak on clay, he hasn't lost in 2 years! These Fed-Nad matches have historical importance because:

1 Fed will have to win Roland Garros (the only clay grand slam) to ever be considered as a consensus GOAT. Sampras never won RG and hence some say he can't be the GOAT, despite winning a record 14 GS titles

2 If Fed ends up having a losing record to his main rival in own era, many will say he's not the GOAT. In other words (no Gee Dubbz), how can Fed be the "greatest of all time" if he gets sonned by "a good player of his own time".

I'm rooting for Fed, but Rafa "The Raging Bull" is too tough right now on clay. I pick Rafa in the final/3rd set.

Fed Cup QFs are also this weekend. Fed Cup is the woman's version of Davis Cup, or the woman tennis' version of the World Cup.

USA is at home v Belgium in Delray Beach, FL. BEL has 2 top players in Justine Henin & Kim Clijsters, but they lamed out & chose not to play. Thus BEL is fielding a gaggle of spares not even in the Top100 in singles or doubles, that should get thoroughly daughtered by the USA. USA has the Williams sisters, doubles veteran Lisa Raymond, & the teenage Vania King. Prolly Williams will play the singles matches, & Raymond/King playing the doubles.

I predict utter Schiavoage here, 5-nil for the USA!

PS, I predict at least 1 random comment to this post here along the lines of "wow Serena, I'd hit that"

Federer & Nadal are gonna play an exhibition May 2 on a half clay, half grass court. Wow, this is both WTF & interesting, I hope it's televised.

I pick Fed in 2 sets.

Indian Wells Final 4

I know it's March Madness time, but there's another big American tournament going on, also with a single-elimination "knockout" bracket format.

This tourney has already reached the Final 4

I'm referring to the Masters Series (AMS) tourney in Indian Wells, CA, which is a 1-2 hr drive from Los Angeles. There are 9 AMS tourneys on the ATP tour, which are the "2nd tier" of tourneys after the top tier of the 4 grands slam tourneys (Wimbledon, French, US, Australian).

The tourney is wide open since Roger Federer aka Sportsman of the Decade, lost in the 1st Rd, Fed's first loss since Aug 07 WTF!

Without Fed, the Final 4 have a golden opportunity to win a "masters shield" and many ranking points. All 4 players are thorough, and 3 are from the rapidly improving young generation born in 86-87.

Today are the semifinal matches (with some nicknames, the last 2 guys don't have nicknames so I invented one for them)

Note - I haven't watch one NCAA game this season. The only player I know of is the last host country champion of the French Open, Yannick Noah, has a son Joachim that plays for Florida. Otherwise I have no frickin clue.

But of course, in these brackets, knowledge seems to have no relation to success. 8-year old daughters routinely son college hoop nerd experts in office pools, so WTF.

My alma matter Iowa State & my hometown U of Minnesota didn't even make "the big dance", so really I have "no dog in this fight".

The closest "dog in this fight" I have then are my folks' alma matter Purdue, & my mom's hometown Louisville. I also am down with the "Zags" (Gonzaga) since they were the last real small school underdog I recall doing big damage & making the Final 4.

Big picture on my picks: I got Kansas, Florida, Memphis, & North Carolina making the Final 4. In the final I got Kansas beating UNC.
