I stumbled upon this great article that explains how the 2nd rap golden age died, along with grunge/alt rock, in 1996, & this sparked the "rap civil war" between the mainstream & the "backpacker".
It's interesting how the conversion of radio & video from a capitalist market to a oligopoly market accelerated the rap industry's dumbing down.

I must be feeling generous because I'm not one to do what I'm told...although you DID ask nicely!
Ok, here are BNH ESSENTIAL MUST HAVEs
The Brand New Heavies - 1991
Heavy Rhyme Experience, Vol 1 - 1992
Brother Sister - 1994
Shelter - 1997
Their very first CD is still in heavy rotation for me. By late '92 I was kinda getting over the whole hip/hop thing, so I didn't enjoy the second CD so much - but you might like it. Brother Sister is some classic shit too...oh fuck it! They're all great! (But the first is still my personal fav!)
^Thx Tam!
No problemo! :)
