This site Lifehacker is great for consumer IT. Lifehacker tracks new developments in several areas including computers, mp3 players, open source applications. It's incredible the amount of things one can do now with a PC, if one learns how to do it. Lifehacker also has a few random non-computer related "consumer reports", such as how to clean stuff.
I once had a question on a post. I e-mailed the post's author, and he quickly e-mailed me back with what he knew. Don't know if this "free consulting" is standard or not, but it was pretty cool.
